The Grind Behind Greatness: Kyle Bernier's Story

From professional CrossFit competition and American Gladiators to fatherhood, coaching, and Mister USA 2026, Kyle Bernier's story has never been about taking the easy route.

At different points in his life, he's been an athlete, entrepreneur, coach, competitor, and father. The titles have changed, but the mindset behind them hasn't.

Keep moving forward.

It's a philosophy that has carried him through victories, disappointments, career pivots, and some of the most physically demanding challenges imaginable.

"You can't quit," Bernier says. "No matter how hard things get, no matter how many setbacks you experience, you have to keep moving forward."

That belief didn't appear overnight. It was built over years of competition, hard work, and learning to trust the process.

Finding a New Challenge

Long before American Gladiators and national stages, Bernier was simply a young athlete who loved competing.

He played football and ran track in college, but his future began to take shape when he discovered CrossFit at around 18 years old.

"As soon as I realized there were people making a living competing in fitness, I was hooked," he says.

Even then, he wasn't ready to walk away from the sports that had shaped him.

"At the time, I was still playing sports, and I wanted to see that chapter of my life through to its natural conclusion."

After two years of collegiate athletics, he made the decision to pursue CrossFit professionally, a move that would introduce him to a completely different level of commitment.

The Reality of Elite Competition

From the outside, professional fitness can look exciting. Behind the scenes, it's relentless.

Bernier describes elite-level CrossFit as a lifestyle where every piece of the puzzle matters.

"Most days involve at least two training sessions, and when you're preparing for a major competition, that can increase to three."

Recovery, nutrition, mindset, and consistency all become non-negotiable.

"Many people simply can't tolerate the workload because their bodies haven't adapted to it yet. Building that capacity takes years."

Yet when he talks about those years, there is no hint of regret.

"I genuinely enjoyed the grind and the challenge that came with pursuing excellence."

For Bernier, the pursuit itself was rewarding.

When Opportunity Arrives Unexpectedly

The opportunity to compete on American Gladiators almost didn't happen.

When Bernier received the initial call, he was thrilled. Then came a second call informing him that he would be travelling as an alternate rather than a primary competitor.

Many athletes would have been discouraged.

Bernier immediately said yes.

"They told me they would still fly me out and that if someone got hurt, I could step in. I said yes immediately."

Walking onto the set felt surreal.

"Everything felt larger than life."

But once he began practicing the events, confidence quickly replaced nerves.

"I knew that if I got an opportunity to compete, I could do really well."

Fifteen Years of Preparation for One Moment

Looking back, Bernier believes every sport he played prepared him for that opportunity.

Football taught physicality and resilience. Track developed speed and athleticism. CrossFit demanded versatility. Gymnastics-style movements improved body awareness and control.

Together, they created the perfect foundation for a competition designed around unpredictability.

"Being thrown inside a giant steel ball wasn't overwhelming because I'd spent my life learning how to adapt and perform in unpredictable environments."

The moment he realized he could make a serious run came after the preliminary rounds.

"I had been subbed in unexpectedly and performed really well. At that point, I knew I had a legitimate shot to make a deep run and potentially win the whole thing."

More Than a Competition

Interestingly, Bernier doesn't describe American Gladiators as a life-changing experience.

Instead, he sees it as validation.

A chance to apply everything years of training had taught him.

"Every lesson was put to the test. How resilient am I physically? How well can I recover? How do I handle cameras, pressure, and expectations?"

The experience reinforced something he already suspected.

"What Gladiators showed me was that all of those years of preparation had a purpose."

It wasn't about learning new lessons.

It was about proving to himself that he was ready when the opportunity finally arrived.

Fatherhood Changed the Why

Athletics may have shaped Bernier's career, but fatherhood reshaped his perspective.

His father passed away at just 52 years old, a reality that now influences how he thinks about health and longevity.

"Now that I'm a father myself, I realize even more how important it is to take care of my health."

Fitness is no longer solely about competition or physical achievement.

"It's about being present for my son and giving myself the best chance to be around for him for a long time."

The lessons he hopes to pass down are simple but powerful.

"I want him to learn that we don't quit."

He wants his son to understand that circumstances don't define the future.

"At any point in life, you can make a decision to change your circumstances and reinvent yourself."

Building Strain Forward

That same mindset became the foundation of Strain Forward Fitness.

Ironically, the company was born during one of the lowest points in Bernier's life.

"I was coming out of a difficult relationship and felt like I had made a lot of mistakes. I felt overwhelmed and uncertain about the future."

The name comes from Philippians 3:13–14.

"Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward toward what lies ahead."

For Bernier, the phrase became more than a scripture.

It became a philosophy.

"To me, straining forward means continuing to move ahead regardless of setbacks, mistakes, or failures."

Progress, he believes, isn't about perfection.

"It's about getting back up every time you fall."

The Advice Most People Need to Hear

As a coach, Bernier often sees people making fitness more complicated than it needs to be.

One myth he wishes would disappear?

The belief that results require endless hours in the gym.

"You don't need hours. You need consistency."

His advice is straightforward.

"If all you have is 30 minutes, then make those 30 minutes count. Show up, train with intensity, and stop looking for excuses."

Because in his experience, consistency always wins.

Recovery Isn't Complicated

Despite years of elite competition, Bernier's approach to recovery is surprisingly simple.

He doesn't obsess over elaborate routines or chase every new trend.

Instead, he focuses on the basics.

"I get as much sleep as possible, train hard, and listen to my body."

His recovery routine includes quality nutrition, sauna sessions, cold plunges, and comfortable footwear that supports recovery throughout the day.

Just as important is his mindset.

"I've learned to focus less on massive long-term goals and more on daily habits."

That philosophy keeps recovery practical and sustainable.

Why Recovery Starts From the Ground Up

After years of training and physically demanding jobs, Bernier understands how much foot fatigue can influence the rest of the body.

"I've worked jobs where I've spent all day on my feet, and I know how miserable it feels when your feet are exhausted after long shifts or hard training sessions."

That perspective is one reason Ance stood out to him.

Rather than focusing on a single feature, he appreciated how the footwear supported natural movement and comfort.

"What stood out to me about Ance Recovery sneakers is how comfortable they are while still allowing your feet to move naturally."

For Bernier, the connection is simple.

"Your feet are literally the foundation of your entire body. When they're supported properly, everything above them benefits as well."

Still Moving Forward

Today, Bernier is preparing for another challenge as Virginia's representative at Mister USA 2026.

For him, the opportunity represents something larger than competition.

It's a reminder that reinvention is always possible.

"I hope people see that if you're willing to step into your gifts, pursue what you feel called to do, and keep showing up even when you're afraid of looking foolish, incredible things can happen."

And if there's one lesson he hopes people take away from his journey, it's the same lesson that has carried him through every chapter of life:

"You have to be willing to trust yourself, believe in yourself, and bet on yourself—because if you won't, nobody else will."

Then he leaves one final reminder.

"Keep going."
